In the heart of Britain's only desert, Dungeness, a unique architectural story unfolds with the creation of Westview Cottage. This project, designed by Hollaway Studio, is an intriguing evolution of the area's built heritage, offering a fresh perspective on how we can approach design in challenging environments.
The Story of Dungeness
Dungeness, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), presents a unique set of design constraints. Any new construction must respect the footprint and mass of previous buildings, a rule that adds an extra layer of complexity to the creative process.
In this case, Hollaway Studio was tasked with transforming a dilapidated 1940s house, plagued by structural issues and a cramped layout, into a modern family home. The solution? An innovative design that incorporates the original home's footprint and that of its eight adjoining outbuildings and timber sheds.
A New Perspective
What makes Westview Cottage particularly fascinating is its ability to maximize space while maintaining a connection to the past. By opening up the living areas and optimizing the views, the studio has created a home that feels spacious and inviting, yet still pays homage to the ad-hoc nature of the original dwelling.
"They wanted to maintain the ad-hoc nature of the existing property, its numerous adaptations, which is very stereotypical of dwellings of this age in Dungeness," the studio explained. This approach is a clever way to honor the history of the site while creating a modern, functional home.
Materiality and Vernacular
The studio's attention to detail extends to the choice of materials. Inspired by the local vernacular, including timber shacks and railway structures, the exterior features a mix of charred and white-coated timber, corrugated metal, and corten steel. This combination of materials not only adds visual interest but also helps the home blend into its surroundings, reflecting the unique character of Dungeness.
"Pobble added a new approach to thinking about materiality... We wanted to build on this legacy," the studio said, highlighting their commitment to creating architecture that contributes to the narrative of Dungeness.
A Home with a View
Inside, Westview Cottage is a study in openness and privacy. The main living area, kitchen, and dining space are connected, creating a sense of flow and connectivity. Yet, the design also ensures that each area has its own identity and a unique view, whether it's a lighthouse or the vast horizon.
The interior finishes, including a concrete floor with local aggregate and white-washed timbers, further enhance the sense of place, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
A Continuing Journey
Westview Cottage is not just a standalone project but a continuation of Hollaway Studio's exploration of materiality and design in Dungeness. With previous projects like Pobble House and Windwhistle, the studio has established a unique architectural language for the area, one that respects the past while embracing the future.
"We believe that architecture should be full of narrative coming from an understanding of place," the studio said. And with Westview Cottage, they have once again demonstrated their ability to create buildings that tell a story, enriching the fabric of Dungeness with each new addition.
This project is a reminder that architecture is not just about creating functional spaces but also about crafting experiences and contributing to the rich tapestry of a place's history.
