The Evolution of Human Brains and Faces: A Tale of Chance and Cultural Influence
The traditional narrative of human evolution, which posits that natural selection steadily favored larger brains and smaller faces, may be an oversimplification. A recent study challenges this long-held belief, suggesting that chance and cultural factors played a more significant role in shaping our ancestors' anatomy.
For decades, scientists have attributed the expansion of the human brain and the reduction of facial features to the benefits of enhanced cognitive abilities and reduced energy costs, respectively. However, the new research indicates that these changes might have been more random and influenced by cultural practices.
The Textbook Story and Its Assumptions
The genus Homo emerged between 2.5 and 3 million years ago, marking the beginning of a gradual transformation toward the modern human skull. During this period, the braincase capacity increased significantly, the face became more flattened, and the jaws and teeth diminished in size.
These changes were often explained by the advantages of larger brains in terms of cognitive abilities and the energy savings associated with smaller faces, as cooking and tools reduced the need for extensive chewing muscles.
Testing the Theory with Fossil Evidence
Mark Hubbe, a biological anthropologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, collaborated with Katerina Harvati from the University of Tübingen in Germany to re-evaluate the fossil record.
They analyzed 63 fossil Homo skulls, including Homo erectus and Neanderthals, as well as 24 skulls from living human populations. By mapping anatomical landmarks on the braincase and face, they aimed to understand how these features evolved over time.
The researchers tested six models of trait change, comparing gradual, directional change with random, aimless change and periods of stability.
The Results: Random Change and Constraint Release
Surprisingly, the directional model, which represents steady selection, rarely emerged as the best fit. Instead, the random change model, akin to genetic drift, received the majority of statistical support.
This finding suggests that the reshaping of the braincase and face in both modern humans and Neanderthals was more influenced by random genetic variations and periods of stability rather than steady selective pressure.
The authors propose that the release of biological and energetic constraints, possibly due to cultural practices like butchering, processing, and cooking food, allowed for greater variation in brain and facial development.
